Too Harsh?

Last week on DWTS, Bruno had some colorful words of criticism for Michael Bolton after his attempt at the jive.  I say attempt, because I can't in good conscience call it dancing.  It really wasn't.  It was painful to watch.  At least for me it was.  It opened with Michael (Bolton) crawling out of a doghouse as the song "Hound Dog" began.  I thought it would be cute.  Clearly he wasn't comfortable with that.  That is part of the problem Billy Ray Cyrus had when he was on it.  He just wasn't comfortable with a lot of the styles of the dances.  And he couldn't dance either!  I WISH I had been blogging then.  I would love to see what Bruno and Len had to say about his dance INabilities!

Just last season, as Kate Gosselin "danced" week after week, I wondered just how in the world she was staying on the show!  Especially when her team mates gave her "golf" claps after her "dances."  And Bruno said things like, "It looked like Tony (Dovoloni) was pushing around a shopping cart."  And, "Tony would get more life from a coat rack!"  Which brings me to my point and question.  The point is, no one cared that Bruno said these things to Kate because they were spot on!  And because she didn't make a stink about it.  In fact, she grew each week--emotionally.  She never could dance.  And so no one cared when Bruno said those things.  No one.

So my question is:  Was Bruno out of line when he told Michael Bolton to go back IN the doghouse?  I do not think so.  Half the fun of that show is listening to the judges say what they have to say.  It would be stinking boring if all they said was, "That was not your best." or "I did not like this dance at all."  BORING!  No entertainment.  These celebrities and people whose names we happen to know, are on a show where they are being JUDGED.  Judged in their ability to learn and demonstrate a new skill.  Some can, some can't.  Were his words harsh?  No.  I do believe his score of 3 was though.  Four would have been sufficient.  It also would not have changed the outcome.  Tell me your opinion!

I'm pretty sure that it's said lightly for the sheer entertainment value. I doubt he is intending to hurt the dancers and would probably feel bad if it really did hurt them. I guess he's trying to emulate Simon Cowell's judging technique, and in that he does fail. Nobody can criticize a contestant like Simon can. ;)

Alas, I don't get reception on my television to watch these shows. Sad, but true. However, I think the concept is absolutely hilarious!

I definitely think it's for entertainment value. On Project Runway, I love hearing the negative comments when the judges are trying to figure out who is going home.

Since he literally came out of a dog house, ten no totally can be said. Doing something like that you have to know comments will be made about it.

Bruno can say some wierd things but he is the entertaining one on the show. He could've given a higher score since it wouldn't have mattered anyway, just to temper his criticism.

Do you know I've never seen this. Still, part of the entertainment is hearing negative comments. It's even more fun when it's nasty and negative! Yeah, I'm sick.

I'm with you. The criticism was ok but that score was too low. Ultimately, he needed to go home though.

I think of Bruno as the 'color commentator'. It's his job to provide the memorable lines.

I have heard some pretty harsh comments on this show and I think most of the time they are appropriate but I really did think that Bruno's comment the other week that Boltons Jive was "The worst Jive he had seen in 11 seasons" was over-the-top harsh. I mean there have been ALOT of bad dancers on this show. Kate Goslin as you mentioned was VERY painful to watch, Buzz Aldren, etc...I think not nice comments are sometimes needed but most of the time they are constructive. But you take someone who has worked so hard, and even though he doesn't dance well, and give him THE rudest comment you can think of - and it was not constructive at all, it was just plain mean.
Yes, I think he should have apologized.

I don't watch the show but saw some clips where Michael B was saying he thought the judges were disrespectful. I think that maybe Michael may be trying to extend his air time by making such a stink. Certainly he must have seen the show before and knew what he was getting into.

It WAS painful to watch (his dance and then the judging)--but it IS the appeal of the show!
