Before Kids I...

I was over at Mama Kat's reading her post of the day, and one of the first things that came to my mind was, "before I had kids...."  And I thought it might be fun to share some of those thoughts with you today.

Before I had kids, I could never understand why...no...HOW mothers could let their kids run around with their hair all askew.  I mean really haven't they heard of these little things called brushes.  Don't laugh.  I said, "BEFORE."

After I had kids, I realized very early on that it does not matter how nice they look when you are done brushing their hair, because 10 seconds later it looks like they just rolled out of bed.

Before I had kids, I couldn't stand to see babies without shoes or socks in the winter.  What are you thinking!?  I even would feel this way after the teen was born.

After I had Little Middle, I realized some babies simply do not like things on their feet.  And from the time she was born I could not keep socks on her.  And when you are a preemie which she was, keeping body temp is hard work.  Keep your socks on child!  Still doesn't like shoes or socks to this day.

Before I had kids, I would see kids with stuff coming out of their nose holes that should be kept inside where no other human being should ever have to see it.  WIPE YOUR KIDS NOSE!  That is DISGUSTING!  NOBODY wants to SEE that!  Did I say that?  Of course not.  Did I feel like saying that?  You betcha!

After I had kids, I found out that sometimes you just don't have something, anything handy to wipe away that nasty mess.  Like the time I was walking Kristin to her class on her first or possibly second day of school when she was in Kindergarten.  Emily was 2 at most.  She also had a nasty cold.  She sneezed.  I had nothing.  It was bad.  I got some seriously dirty and disgusted looks.  Oh well.  Lesson learned...I always almost always have tissue now.

Before I had kids, I would see some holy terror child screaming, running, throwing a raging tantrum.  I would think...oh please go home!  Oh yes I did.

After I had kids....well....you know.

What did you say or do then that you are totally eating crow for?

Yep, that's what I've noticed. I came into momhood late. My stepdaughter was 8 when I met her. Getting her to shower is a HUGE effort and then she doesn't put conditioner on it unless you stand there and remind her...so her hair is all tangly. If it naturally dries, it's a mess. She just doesn't care. I'm sure, since she's 10, that will change soon and she'll get that vanity bug most teenage girls get!

Great post! I always had the hardest time figuring out how any parent could ever abuse their kids. And while I never have and pray I never will, I can understand what might lead some parents to do that, not that it is okay or justified though.

Before I had kids I thought I'd love playing with them every single second of the day and never get bored. . . hmmmm, well I'll admit, it can get boring at times! But before I had kids, I was also more oblivious to my faults and thought I was closer to perfect than I really am. I was more selfish. I'm glad for the changes!

I've said/thought all those things at some time before I had kids. Then I had mine and Karma kicked my butt for it!

Oh the hair is bad around our place. I say, "brush your hair" and afterwards, it still looks like they just stepped out of a hurricane. You'd think a thirteen year old would be a little more fastidious about it, but no.

My darling daughter in law has 4 kids. When they were young, I was horrified to see that she didn't comb their hair whenever they went outside. Uh huh. With my own 2, it was hard enough. With 4? Give me a break!

Awesome post! I'm guilty of so many of the same judgements! I remember thinking "why don't parents just teach their children not to scream in stores?" And then, one day I was the one with the screaming child. Who knew?
